Luxxe White has been buzzing the health, aesthetics and business industries for almost 10 years now and its distribution and consumption had reached other countries around the world; and garnered numerous prestigious awards (1). What makes Luxxe White unique? Why it is promoted as "enhanced"?
Let's take a look on its ingredients. Reduced Glutathione (GSH) - the tripeptide glutathione (GSH) is composed of three amino acids namely L-glutamic acid, glycine and L-cysteine. This is a basic ingredient of almost all glutathione supplements in the market. There's nothing unique about it. A thorough discussion on glutathione chemistry was discussed in our previous blog entry (2). N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) - it is known that oral glutathione supplements have low bioavailability but one particular recent study shows that prolonged oral supplementation increases glutathione levels by a significant percentage (3). |
Bioavailability is the degree and rate at which a substance (such as a drug) is absorbed into a living system or is made available at the site of physiological activity (4). This means, that no matter how much oral GSH you are going to take, your body will only experience minimal effect because it cannot absorb much GSH through this administration. This is where NAC comes into play. N-acetyl cysteine is a glutathione precursor. It is a source of cysteine, a main limiting factor in the glutathione synthesis (5). Several studies showed that NAC is well absorbed by the intestine and that supplementation with NAC is effective in enhancing GSH levels in the body (6,7,8).
Ascorbic Acid (Vit. C)
- ascorbate's (from ascorbic acid) potent antioxidant capability is already proven especially with its scavenging activity and high rate of reaction with free radicals (9,10,11). As both antioxidants, ascorbic acid and glutathione goes hand-in-hand in fighting oxidative stress. Several studies show this metabolic cooperation and inter-dependency (12,13). Thus, adding ascorbic acid to the formulation, in one way or another, enhances the antioxidant capability of an oral glutathione supplement.
Alpha-lipoic Acid (ALA)
- alpha-lipoic acid is another antioxidant that helps prevent certain kinds of cell damage in the body, and also restores vitamin levels such as C and E (14). ALA is shown to directly scavenge both reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) (15). Like ascorbic acid and glutathione, there is also a connection and correlation between levels of ALA and GSH. Several studies show that alpha-lipoic acid supplementation and treatment increases the levels of glutathione in the liver, blood, and brain as well as natural GSH production (16,17,18).
Grape seed Extract (GSE)
- grape seed extract is one of the natural plant extracts that is currently on intensive studies due to its potential antioxidant capabilities and marketed as supplement. It has been also used nowadays to treat various diseases and shows promising results (19). GSE is shown to fight oxidative stress and normalized glutathione levels in several initial studies on models (20,21).
Scientifically, there are connections between Luxxe White ingredients. Each one enhances the effects of glutathione (GSH) and increases the indigenous GSH levels in our body. An ENHANCED glutathione indeed!
